Audience: Donors, families, students, and education partners
Challenge: Communicating a complex, multi-organization mission with clarity and cohesion
Solution: Cohesive, story-driven annual reports across Foundation and Academy
Result: Student-centered reports that strengthened donor belief and unified messaging
Where They Started
Making Waves Education Foundation is a Bay Area nonprofit committed to closing opportunity gaps through academic coaching, financial literacy, and career support for students from middle school through college. Its charter school, Making Waves Academy, prepares students for success in higher education and beyond.
With a mission spanning both the Foundation and the Academy, Making Waves needed expert design support to present student outcomes in a way that built donor confidence and trust starting with separate annual reports for each organization.
Each report needed to reflect unique programs while still feeling aligned under the same mission and visual identity.
Making Waves already had the essentials: a strong mission, powerful stories, and meaningful results. The challenge was shaping those elements into a cohesive storytelling system donors and families could immediately connect to.
What Was Getting in the Way
The work sat with a small internal team led by a VP of Marketing and Storytelling responsible for shaping communications across both the Foundation and the Academy.
There wasn’t extra capacity to design multi-report publications of this scale while also managing day-to-day campaigns, events, and student-facing communications. The team needed a partner who could step in, absorb complexity quickly, and move projects forward without adding friction.
Making Waves needed design that could:
- Engage donors, families, and students
- Maintain a unified look across two distinct organizations
- Elevate impact data and student voices without overwhelming readers
- Translate complex outcomes into clear visuals
- Work seamlessly across print and digital formats
As their VP of Marketing and Storytelling shared:
“Olivia takes the time to really understand our nonprofit organization’s mission as well as the goal, audience, and style for each project… I have really enjoyed collaborating with Olivia over the years and would highly recommend working with her.”
What We Built
Across two years, we created four consecutive annual reports, deepening the storytelling and sharpening the visuals year after year.
Key elements included:
Story-Forward Annual Reports
Cohesive publications that elevated student voices and clarified each organization’s role in long-term success.
Impact Data Visualization
Clear charts and graphics that helped donors quickly understand outcomes across programs.
Student-Centered Layouts
Design choices that kept real lived experiences at the center of the narrative.
Mission-Aligned Visual Identity
A unified design language reflecting the energy and ambition behind Making Waves’ commitment to equity.
Print + Digital Flexibility
Reports optimized for both physical distribution and online sharing.
Social + Email Assets
On-brand promotional graphics to extend the report’s reach.
Repurposed Donor One-Pager
A distilled takeaway used in fundraising conversations.
What Changed
Annual reporting became a consistent storytelling platform, not a one-time deliverable.
Donors saw clearer outcomes. Students and families saw themselves reflected. Internal teams gained materials they were proud to share.
The reports created a unified visual language that connects the Foundation and the Academy while honoring their distinct roles in student success.
